a single guy we've been chatting to for over a year... when do we just do it

theres this guy, met him at a club night in manchester march last yr, we've been chatting on and off the whole time, met up for drinks twice as a 3, no play, just vibes. wifes been clear shes interested in a single bull experience while i watch, i've been ok with the idea on paper for ages. but every time we plan a weekend it gets pushed... his work, our work, kids, anxiety, you name it. starting to wonder if we're using excuses cos one of us isnt actually ready and just wont say. how long did it take you to go from talking about a single guy to actually doing it, and is it normal for it to take this long
