"ill verify on whatsapp video" then the angles got weird...

so we asked a couple from auckland to do a quick video call before meeting in person, standard stuff right. she agreed, came on camera but the whole call she was filmed from below the chin down, or just her hands, or her in profile staring out a window... never a clear face shot. when i gently asked if she could just turn the camera a bit she said her wifi was bad and the call dropped. wouldnt rebook. i feel insane because the bloke kept saying "shes shy on camera"... but isnt the whole point of verification to actually see her face? is this a known scam pattern or am i being paranoid
