melbourne LS... is the north vs south side divide real or is that just suburb snobbery

every melbourne couple we've spoken to has STRONG opinions about whether the north side or south side scene is better and i cant tell if its genuine vibe differences or just regular melbourne suburb tribalism applied to the LS world... we're currently in the inner north and the closest club is south of the river. is it worth the trek or are there decent meets and venues on the north side weve missed?? also is one side more couples focused and the other more single friendly?? trying to figure out where to plant our flag basically...
