My mother-in-law found the toy drawer. She has not spoken to me in six days Picture it. Sunday afternoon. We're at brunch. MIL is housesitting because she was watching the dog. She decides to be helpful and put away the laundry I'd left in the dryer. Top drawer of our bedroom dresser is where I keep the laundry-folding stuff. The drawer two from the bottom — which she opened looking for fitted sheets that are absolutely not in a dresser — has the contents of our weekend life including a few photographs from a party we attended last spring. Polaroids. From a club. Of both of us. Identifiable. With other people. She closed the drawer. She finished folding the laundry. She left a note that said 'dog walked, dinner in the freezer.' She has not answered a single text or call from her son since. It's day six. My husband is a wreck. He's an only child, his father passed three years ago, and his mother is the most religious person I've ever met outside of a convent. We have no idea if she's going to tell the rest of the family, our daughter (twelve), or simply ghost us forever. The dog has not stopped sleeping at the front door since she left. Possibly unrelated.
