vetting a new couple via friendship before play... is this the way?

our group of 5 couples has a rule that any new couple who wants in goes thru a friendship trial first. drinks, dinners, maybe a holiday, before anyone in the group plays with them. its taken some couples 8+ months to "graduate" lol. but in 6 yrs we've never had a bad apple, never had drama, never had to remove anyone. is this the way more groups should operate? feels like it works for us but i wonder if its gatekeeping... 18+ btw and yeh everyone is consenting adults who choose the timeline
