we clicked with a couple, said "lets think on it for a sec" and they vanished by last call. did we accidentally offend them

this happened last weekend and its been bugging me all week. so couple at the club, were chatting at the bar, vibe is GOOD, were all four into it, she suggests we go grab the smaller cabana on the side and like.... we hesitated. not bc of them. bc we have a rule that we always take 5 min between "yes lets meet" and "yes lets play" to do a couple check-in alone and we said exactly that — "give us 5, were gonna grab water and talk for a sec, we'll find you." she smiled and said totally fine. we did our check in (both of us were YES btw), came back out at maybe 12 min mark not 5 (had a small disagreement abt smth unrelated, took longer than we thought), and they were GONE. like not in the cabana, not at the bar, not in the lounge. checked the playroom from the doorway, not there either. drove home confused. f40 he 43, married 18 yrs, lifestyle 6 yrs, weve done this 5-min thing dozens of times w no issue but usually the other couple is still there when we come back. did we hurt their feelings. did "give us 5" actually read as "we're bailing"? oh and btw it was already kinda late, like 12:30am ish, so maybe they just left bc it was late, idk. but my gut says they read our hesitation as a soft no and bounced. is there a better way to ask for the check-in pause without it landing wrong. or should we have just gone w it and trusted ourselves
