we speak french at home but only english with play partners, is anyone else doing this and why french-canadian couple living in toronto, both early 30s, moved from montreal three years ago. our home life is 100% french. the dog is bilingual but the cat only knows french lol. we've been in the toronto LS about 18 months. heres the weird thing weve clocked. the second we're in a play context with another couple, we go full english. not just with them, with EACH OTHER. like ill ask my husband something across the room and itll come out in english even tho i would never say it that way at home. and then in the uber on the way back we're straight back into french before the seatbelt clicks. at first i thought it was politeness, like obviously we're not gonna talk over a play partner in a language they don't speak. fair enough. but it's more than that. we don't even WANT to be in french in that context. its like LS sex lives in english for us now and home life lives in french and the two don't cross. and ive been trying to figure out why. partner thinks its because we learned all our LS vocab in english (we started lurking on english language sites and the only club we've been to in toronto is anglo run) and our french doesn't have the same... library? for it. which kinda makes sense. but it also feels like more than that, like its a way of keeping our relationship and the LS in separate boxes. anyone else with a different home language doing the same thing.
